The lovely Scarlett, creator and owner of Wonder Curl was kind enough to send me some of her products to try and share with all of our readers. For some reason I am always a bit reluctant to try new products. I have this fear that I only have once chance to do my hair within the day and if it isn’t right the first time then my hair is ruined for the day. In so many ways it is true. For my hair texture, it is a more time intensive process then say, Antoinette’s process. She diffuses her hair and I air dry. So after about 2 and a half hours invested in drying my hair and the ish ain’t right, aint nobody got time to try and do the whole damn thing over again. Holla if you hear me! But anyway, the stakes were high when I tried Wonder Curl products because I had to go to work the same day. I definitely needed those products to work because I had a deadline. Work they did. Here is my process.
Here are the two products I used Wonder Curl’s “Get Set” Hair Jelly and “Detoxifying Clay Cleanser”
I jumped into the shower, opened the clay cleanser and thought to myself “what in the hell am I supposed to do with this?” In a haste, I just scooped out a handful of the smooth, pasty clay and slapped it on my wet hair, gingerly working it in and then pulling it down the shaft of my hair, allowing the residual dirt and clay to fling off. If I had to do it all over again (and I recommend this to any that are going to try) I would definitely cleanse in four sections and continue the technique of pulling it down your hair shaft.
The clay was soft and pleasantly scented. It of course did not lather like a shampoo but immediately I noticed the positive reaction of my curl formation after cleansing. My curls popped and my hair felt clean. Not stripped but clean and enriched.
Here is a shot of my hair after the cleansing. I have only added a light leave in conditioner of my choice nonetheless you can see the curl formation and definition caused by the cleanser.
I then reached for the “Get Set” Hair Jelly . This jelly promises to impart hold and eliminate frizz. I figured that a wash and go would be the best style with which to put those promises to the test. The jelly smelled very nicely. Clean and subtle.
I used about a quarter amount of the “Get Set” Jelly on each section of my head.
After sectioning off portions of my hair, I started from the very top of my head near my scalp and distributed the jelly down my hair’s shaft. (FYI When putting any product in your hair, you must always practice this technique of top to bottom – in sections. ”Smooshing” or random, uneven distribution of product NEVER brings about good results).
I continued sectioning and distributing the jelly throughout my entire head. I did NOT follow with an oil immediately thereafter because I wanted to see the products naked and I also was not sure how the jelly would react to the oil. I left my hair alone to dry and went about my daily business of paying for parking tickets. If you live in Philly you know the struggles of PPA. I hate them.
Wonder Curl Detoxifying Clay Cleanser - A
My only gripe is that I needed clearer directions to be included with this cleanser because clay cleansing is so foreign to many of us. Aside from that, I highly recommend this cleanser. It was smooth and left no residual matter in my hair. My curls immediately responded with definition and it did what it said it would do – cleansed my hair! What I also really loved about this product, is that it felt homemade. It had that little extra something something that made me feel safe and secure in the ingredients. It felt fresh and alive rather than watered down and cut with crazy chemicals. I really appreciated the wholesomeness of the sights, smells and textures of Wonder Curl’s products.
Get Set Hair Jelly – B++
I really, really, really loved this jelly. I would never gravitate towards a jelly before a pomade or pudding but I think I may have changed my prejudice ways. Kind of…
What I loved about the jelly was it’s final effect, which was awesomely defined, chunky, soft, malleable curls that maintained it’s hold for DAYS! What I did not like was the hour and a half in which the gel was drying. Upon putting the gel on my hair, the feel was a strange sensation which made me feel like I may or may not have made a mistake. It was a stiff almost drying feel. I now associate that feeling with the fact that Aloe Vera is the main ingredient in the jelly which is freaking awesome because Aloe is the best thing to ever happen to my hair but it gives that strange, stiff feeling initially. But trust once it was dry, that feeling gave way to soft supple curls. Praise ‘Em. The hold had lasted me 3 days ya’ll. 3 days. Praise ‘Em.
