Shanti’s Twist Out Technique + SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Mix Chicks DC Product Review

Me and my young jawns Andrea and Natasha
So during and after the Curl Daze event, I have received a lot of questions as to how I styled my hair. It is really quite simple and I thought that I would give you all a pictorial of how I did it. I also tried a couple of new products for this style. I used Sheamoisture Curling Enhancing Smoothie as a styling/hold product and Mix Chicks deep conditioner as a pre-styling treatment. Want to see it? Here we go!
I began with freshly washed hair. I then deep conditioned with Mix Chicks deep conditioner which I allowed to sit on my hair for an hour before rinsing. After rinsing, I applied Kinky Curly Knot Today leave-in conditioner to my wet hair followed by a light almond oil.
I then parted a side part in my damp hair and began to do FLAT two strand twists. Before twisting I took a quarter size amount of the SheaMoisture and applied it to the section of hair that I intended to twist. My product application was as follows.
1. Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave in
2. Almond Oil
3. SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie
I twisted 3 twist on one side and two twist on the opposite side, ending with 4 twists in the back. The reasoning for this is I wanted to twist my hair in the direction that I want it to fall. I want my hair to fall dramatically to the side therefore I parted on the side nearly passed my right eyebrow. This leaves me with more hair to manage on one side then the other. That is my intention.

2 Twists on opposite side
4 (or is that 5) FLAT twist extending downward.
I then covered my hair and went to sleep to allow it to dry. Upon waking and getting ready for my day (pictured) I made sure my hair  was completely dry and began to carefully unravel my twists.

I then take the side with less hair and smooth it towards the back securing it with this handy dandy device that can be purchased at your local drug or beauty supply store.

After pinning the top hair to also go to the side. Here are the results. Easy Breezy.

The Product Reviews
SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie = C
Price – I liked this stuff. It worked alrite for my wash and gos. The twist out was questionable
The price is so reasonable. Just 9.99 for a huge tub of great quality, no nonsense ingredients.
Hold – It gets a B for wash and goes but a C for twist outs. For my wash and goes the curl is well defined and soft. For this twist out my hair felt really fluffy and ready to poof up at any minute. Maybe I should have been more generous with my application but it just did’nt hold that well. It did for my twist out for the event though. Hmmm? I will have to do some experimenting. It may be my human error
Smell– Sweet baby Jesus this stuff smells great.    Overall scoring – Even though I didn’t have the most stellar results, I believe that the SheaMoisture brand is soon to reign as one of the most effective and beloved hair products in the natural hair community. It’s a quality product with a reasonable price. It can’t get no betta. Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner = A- Scent– In my opinion it was awful. It smelled like I had dish detergent on my head. Not my cup of tea Slip– I wish there was more slip to this DC. It did not give me the glide that I was hoping for. Nonetheless it is incredibly thick. To me, that is the way a DC should feel- like creamy thick gunk. Just do not expect to be able to detangle with ease with this in your hair. Moisturizing qualities– Mixed Chicks did their damn thing! I must say Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner does nothing for my hair. My hair laughs in the face of that stuff but my hair was shook like a mugg when their DC came and laid the smack down on it’s dry ass! I left the DC on for an hour and upon rinsing, my hair felt great. It did not rinse with a tacky, weighed down feeling that some DC cause. Instead, my hair felt really clean and light yet extremely moisturized and happy. I am writing this review 2 days later and my hair still feels great. I really recommend those turned off by Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner to make room in their hearts for their DC because the brand deserves redemption. The Mixed Chicks deep conditioner is the even if it smells like dish detergent. Have you tried these products? What were your results?

  1. You are SO beautiful and are incredibly thoughtful to share such great information with your readers 🙂

I just wonder if the products will work the same for my hair as I’m not mixed…

Anyhow… I’m Georgina and your newest follower! I hope you have a wonderful long weekend xo

    • Why thank you so much for the kind words! Welcome Georgina!
I know a lot of people are turned off by Mixed Chicks because the brand name is so “exclusive” and segregating but in all honesty their leave in conditioner does nothing for my hair and I am mixed! Thats why I was nervous about trying their Deep conditioner. But to my surprise it was fabulous!!!
As far as the Sheamoisture goes. YOU HAVE TO GIVE IT A TRY!!! It is perfect for all hair types.

  2. Beautiful Shanti! How do you keep your ends from frizzing up from a flat twist? No matter how careful I unravel, i still end up with the ends of the flat twist out frizzy…it drives me mad!

    • Girl my ends frizz up too! It is really humid in Philly and that twist out puffed up immediately. I suffer from really frizzy ends when my ends aren’t in shape. Maybe you may want to give yourself a little trim. Try a Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) rinse as well. Frizzy ends come from lifted hair cuticles. Research how to close your hair cuticles. ACV and aloe vera juice are great for that.

  3. Maaaannnn I couldn’t stop admiring Shanti’s hair at the event. I just love it!

Now..the Curl Enhancing Smoothie? I think I buy this because of the scent lol no joke this ish gets me all da time! As for enhancing my curls? I dont think it does that, and it’s suppose to hold too? hold what exactly? because it doesn’t do that either, BUT it does moisturize my hair and beside’s the scent, that’s another reason why I continue to buy it.

As for mixed chicks products – tried the leave in andddd *queue Men on Film in Living Color* Hated it!

  4. I’m drooling over that twist out. Seriously. I really like the shea moisture curl and styling hair milk. I used to use the curl enhancing smoothie but for some reason by day 3 or 4 my hair would feel rather dry. But i love the results of these products on your hair!

  5. Is this a late April Fool’s Day joke? I can’t believe that you got such excellent results with such a terrible product (Sheamoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie). It should be called “Frizz Enhancing”. LOL. Instead of an “A”, I would give it a “D” for DRY because that’s how it makes my hair look and feel. But, on your hair, it looks great. I guess it’s true what they say, “Everyone’s hair is different. Test things out and see what works best for you.”

  6. Love the style! I don’t think most ppl use it this way, but you can use the Curl Enhancing Smoothie as a deep conditioner too! I did before I cut most of my hair off and it worked nicely. I have to yet to try it on my cut though, I ran out if it before I could and have yet to buy more. 🙂

  7. Epic results ^_^ you have such beautiful skin too! As for the Curl Enhancing Smoothie, it’s great for moisture but does not claim to do anything for hold :\ which I definitely experienced first hand, and you mentioned in your review as well!

  8. Very nice. I love Shea Moisture’s CES for finger detangling on dry hair. I haven’t had a lot of success with it defining my curls. I’m still trying to find a “holy grail” for defining twist outs but I’m going to try your technique of using flat twists.

  9. I love this style and i can’t wait for it to be later in the day so i can try it…my only question is “did you french twist your hair? and if so (seeing as i am not very good at doing that ;/) do you have any suggestions on how to make french twisting easier?

    • Hey there. You know these are flat twists and no t french braids. French braids are much harder. Flat twist are just two strands… you should youtube how to flat twist. It takes a little practice, like anything but you’ll get it.

  10. Hi Shanti, I love your results.
I seen your method on Curly Nikki’s website and tried it out. I am relaxed with shoulder length hair and this was my second time doing a twist out. I used the mixed chicks DC, KCKT, and shea moisture products and my hair was so soft. I liked the way my twists came out have blogged and youtubed me doing your method- of course given you due credit. Thanks for this post! I will definately try this again and am glad that I can use my curly head products (two years ago I when product junkie happy thinking I was going to transition)…
