Rih or Bey?

RIhanna beyonce

I hate to do this but I’m gonna. Pop culture don’ hypnotized me y’all. I know it’s the year of Rihanna for us (up until Bey drops that album) but I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about this so I’m curious who would yall want to wife up or become homegirls with? Picture Perfect Bey or Ratchet Rih?

I personally love Beyonce. I would go as far to say that I’m a little infatuated by her but I would probably rather have a girls night out with Rihanna. So what does that mean? Does a semi clean cut- good girl image just not cut it anymore? Are we innately attracted to things that have a danger factor attached to them or is Rihanna’s bad girl image revealing and liberating my inner bad girl? Weigh in.

  1. It’s not that Rihanna’s bad girl image is more appealing, I think we’re seeing her live her authentic life and that’s more relatable across the board. Whether you agree with what she’s doing or not, she’s living her life out loud, by her rules, and without concern over what people think. Beyonce is older and in a different place in life, but her image has been carefully constructed and managed over the years. I’m sure Beyonce is a ton of fun, but the public isn’t privy to it. Therefore, it’s easy to put Beyonce on a pedestal b/c of her insane talent, but it terms of relating to her as a girlfriend nobody really even know who she is! I’m looking forward to seeing her HBO Special next month and getting a further glimpse into her real personality.

  2. Idk I may be a little biased as a Bey stan, but I think the fact that people even compare them side by side is a little insulting honestly. I mean this is Beyonce. BEYONCE. 16 Grammys, has worked with Prince, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Etta James, Luther Vandross just to name a few. Rihanna is cool as hell and her clothes are dope but…that’s it. As fun as it is to be ratchet for a night…aint nobody got time that lifestyle for ever! *sweetie brown voice* Beyonce is well on her way to becoming legendary if she’s not already. Rihanna really doesn’t bring much to the plate besides being fun and ratchet and we all know that that doesn’t last. It really blows my mind when people try to put them in the same lane when quite frankly they just arent. Beyonce can sing better, dance better, puts on amazing once-in-a-lifetime performances, and is just a better entertainer. Rihanna is cool but facts are facts. She doesnt have the experience or the names under her belt that Beyonce does and as far as being “fun”…we all know Beyonce is fun and hilarious but she cant be expected to be running around in strip clubs and smoking weed like Rihanna. She’s a mom Christ’s sake! And even if she did do all that stuff, God only knows how the media would RIP her apart! I think Bey is just fine in her legendary lane. Rihanna can keep ratchet road.

  3. I think that both examples are on the extreme. On one hand, Beyonce is too much of a good girl that it is not believable. no one is perfect (unless you’re not human). While she captivates our interest, i found myself put off by her at times because the perfect image seems too fake (i still love her though). However, with Rihanna, she shows us that being imperfect is okay. So, i see her journey has being more authentic than that of Beyonce. However, i feel that sometimes Rihanna takes it a little too far and that she doesn’t know when too much is just TOO much. You don’t have to go bare for the world to see that you are authentic. However, i love them both and would make them both my homegirls!!!
And to answer the question of:
Does a semi clean cut- good girl image just not cut it anymore? Are we innately attracted to things that have a danger factor attached to them or is Rihanna’s bad girl image revealing and liberating my inner bad girl?

I think that we are attracted to both the good girl image (beyonce) and the bad one (Rihanna) because we have a little bit of both living inside of us. It’s a Ying Yang thing ;)

  4. i agree with melissa. there’s no comparison. the minute rihanna puts on some clothes, she wont get as much attention. the ratchet bad girl image is what draws people in. i dont hear people saying wow look at how talented she is. i hear people say, “can you believe she did that?” “shes out of control.” i wouldnt want to look back and see that i built my career on scandal. i respect the fact that bey doesnt put it all out there for people to see. she relies on her talent to sell records. it good to see her opening up more but i dont blame her for not putting her entire life on display. shes proof that you can be a grown, powerful, sexy, woman without constantly making yourself a sex object.

  5. South Loop hit it on the head for me. To go a little deeper… it depends on you and your values and what is important to you. Bey has been managed well and her image is protected. Any information that has been given to the public is well edited and made to be viewed as positive, spiritual and grounded all the way back to her younger years. There are people who relate to Bey and plenty who relate to Rih. I suppose it all depends on where you’re at in your life. I’m not sure if I think Rih has a danger factor attached to her, at least not for me. But she seems fun in a careless nonjudgmental kind of way. I embrace real people. Bey, in the public, is not realistic to me; she always seems like she’s holding back and playing the part. Rih, is Rih, and even if it was a facade… she sure fooled me.

  6. I’d prefer to hang with Rih, even though I’m not cray and wild. Bey too fufu shishi for me. But at the end of the day, not really a huge fan of either of them. Their music is good.

  7. I was just about that too! What if her “bad girl, free-spirit” attitude is just her playing a role as well? She could very well be playing the part of the bad girl who’s reckless because she knows that sells records. People think that when you’re put together well all the time that it could be fake but God only knows what her management and the people in charge of her tell her to do to maintain her audience. People LOVE the ratchet stuff she does. Im just not sure of how much peace she could have living like that ALL the time.

    • agreed! She could be faking too. but i still just want to party with her once. Patron shots can I get a refill! : ) and then after go back to my planner and date book like nothing ever happened.

  8. I don’t see why they have this comparison. They’re two completely different people/images/personas. Besides Beyonce trashes Rihanna any day.

  9. Team Rih all day long! I feel like she expresses herself to the fullest. I love Bey, but she’s too mature for me. I could shut down every club with Rih and then go chill out in Barbados.

  10. While I may not like Rihanna’s choices…she just seems more real! So, I would much prefer to hang out with her. She messes up, she looks good, she looks bad. Whatever! She just comes across as more authentic & likeable.

  11. Ummmm, I could’nt hang out with Rih. She just seems two-faced and catty. I would feel like I would have to watch my back the whole night. I am sorry but I like to just chill instead of hanging out with ratchet Rih. Maybe if I were still in college. King Bey all the way. Grown and Sexy!

  12. i feel like Rihanna is who i am today and bey who i strive to be. like every time i listen to “dance for you” i think “i need a man deserving of every lyric of this song in my life”. rude boys get old. beyonce looks truly happy and rihanna seems like she is searching for something.

  13. @Jessica, I don’t see Bey as a good girl at all…very fake, I agreee, will not knock her hustle though she earned it…Rih well she is def a good time girl and soooo young…I’m glad she is living her life

  14. Beyonce all the way. Just because we dont see the party doesnt mean it aint all the way LIVE! She has the power to party and let it not be seen or known by just any and everyone. Which means I can do whatever I want and not risk being seen by someone at my job or my parents or anything of that nature (yes I care about my image) that could cost me my life. Bey has that ish on LOCK and IMO that is a MUST! Knowing me, hanging with Rhi would lead to trouble, drugs, sex and all the ish I would do…if I was still 21 and in college. Not at the age of 29. In actuality, there is really no way to compare the two. Rhi is young, free and wild while Bey is matured, married and classy. Nothing wrong with either, but I think once Rhi reaches Bey’s status/level and age, she probably wont be wildin out either. At the end of the day, both are awesomely talented and beautiful and I love their music. If I could choose both…I would lol!

  15. Who sang the national anthem on this momentous day? Bey shuts them ALL down. And I agree with Alisha why shouldn’t she be allowed some privacy. If you want a job today you can’t disclose everything on FB/twitter/social media. It’s all about your carefully crafted image. I guess you can get away with a lot more in the entertainment field. I’m always on the side of talent and as catchy as rih’s songs are and beautiful she is, not much on talent.

  16. See I don’t know if I agree wholeheartedly with Shaun because Rihanna topped the charts while fully clothed. She became more rockerish with Umbrella and started creating some thunder. She and her team then realized that by changing her look/music and becoming more “edgy”, it added to her fan base. This whole notion of her taking her clothes off to me is recent and real talk, Beyonce takes her clothes off too.

@Antoinette, I would be clubbing with Rih too and save Sunday tea pinkies up with Beyonce. :)

  17. I’m a new reader so I’m just dipping into this post with my two cents. Personally, I’d ditch them both & go out for drinks with Gabrielle Union or Regina Bell – they just seem to have a more genuine, relaxed personality with a side of goofy that I can relate to.
